I tend to agree with one of the experts last night who said that he thought it was premature to assume that Bin Laden is behind this. He noted that this type of operation would have been a huge step up from Bin Laden's normal MO, which up until now has been car bombs and single-target attacks. The amount of coordination and resources needed to pull off this type of an operation is staggering, and one has to wonder whether it would need the backing of a government to pull it off.

Think about it. Whoever did this coordinated four hijackings of planes taking off within 5 minutes of each other from 3 different airports. The hijackings were accomplished without exception and 75% of the designated targets were hit with maximum effect. The hijackers had to have been trained to kill, keep hundreds of passengers at bay and pilot these aircraft with precision to hit, without landing the planes, relatively small targets. The plane that hit the Pentagon was still airborne at impact. Each of the aircrafts' transponders were disabled, which requires knowledge of secret codes that are different for each aircraft.

This was a sophisticated, precise, expensive operation that required impeccable timing and intimate knowledge of procedures and machinery. It took years and millions of dollars to plan and execute. It seems unlikely to me that someone holed up in a bunker in Afghanistan could have orchestrated this without the assistance of a foreign government.

Our government's response to this will impact generations of Americans.
