Point is I don't think gold has stood the test of time. Certainly not in my lifetime.

As for affecting the course of human events, I would suggest slavery had as great or greater impact. Fortunately that too is mostly an anachronism. However, it's interesting that those parts of the world still closest to gold are often closest to slave-state conditions. They tend to be the most backward and inward looking.

Now that should get a rise....
