is the any secruity between arrival areas and departure area. I ask because it would appear that at least 2 of the hijackers arrived from Portland.

Unlikely, most airports you disembark and then the baording areas are within the same areas/concourses, behind security. If you had to go buy a ticket though, you'd would have to exit that area and re-enter, through "security".
