Any call to stop shorting is a noble thought, but it won't happen. Shorting in general constitutes only a small fraction of market activity as most don't understand it or just don't do it anyway. Of the shorting that does go on, retail shorts make up a small part of the total as large investors and commercial or brokerage house shorts make up a much larger part. I have said it before, shorting is a function and tool of market activity. Short covering on that wide a scale could potentially wipe out many large investors, hedge funds, etc. Why should these people take the brunt of the market fall? Since most positions are long, how about making a call to get people to stop selling their stock which would have a far greater impact? And what about all those foreign investors. I have said it before, this is a global situation as all markets are falling and you cannot save one market by asking a few shorts to stop or cover when all markets are falling. There are no doubt foreign investors pulling out because their own markest are falling. What about all those who have to sell for margin reasons? Should they go bankrupt too?
The shorting issue needs to stop, now. I for one make a living by it, as do the brokers, funds, other investors, etc. I don't plan on going broke, nor do I plan on giving my money to the big brokers by going long when I don't think it is appropriate.
