I think taking Afghanistan will take time. A lightning strike won't work because the targets will be hiding in bunkers and mountains. Really cleaning up afghanistan will take years. Here are my thoughts.

Afghanistan is difficult terrain which could cause many US casualties in the event of a ground war just like the experiences of the Russians and other imperialsts before them. However, Afghanistan does have some weaknesses like a terrible famine and few helpful neighbors. We have weapons of mass destruction. So we can do the following to the Taliban:
Nuke the present leadership
nuke the terrorist training bases
start building neutron bombs
destroy their cash crops (heroin - opium)
cut off current supply lines - primarly iran and pakistan, the three former soviet republics aren't very friendly
nuke supply lines that don't stay cut
establish defensible fortified positions inside the country
establish refugee camps inside the country
leaflet the country urging afghanis to go to the refugee camps for food.
Wait. Leaflet some more. Wait.
Eventually kill all remaining people in afghanistan who do not surrender unconditionally.
Rebuild the country by making it self-sufficient for food. Clean up ordnance. Rebuild infrastructure. Educate everyone including women.
