I've been spending time today reading international news reports. Some of the statements from governments and the public abroad are heartwarming and thought I'd share them here.

European Commission President Romano Prodi: "In the darkest days of European history, America stood close by us and today we stand close by America."

The European Union has declared Friday a day of mourning throughout its 15 member states in solidarity with the victims of the attacks.

NATO: European allies would react to the attack on America as if it were an attack on themselves.

The following comments from Gerhard Schroeder are common, and even from countries that are not traditional allies (like the next one). "This is not only an attack on the United States but an attack on the civilized world."

Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque: "Cuba laments and expresses its profound sadness for the loss of so many innocent lives and expresses our absolute rejection of acts of terrorism, wherever they may come from." (he also offered airspace and airports to "any aircraft from the United States or elsewhere that needs it."

Russian President Vladimir Putin in a telegram to Bush, "such an inhuman act must not go unpunished."

But, though you hear these comments, how do you "punish" a group that have beliefs so deep they are willing to commit suicide for them? Without ever increasing the cycle of violence? I think any response will need to be very well thought out.
