The Soviets attempted that. At the time they had an army larger than our current army. They also had an large common border with Afghanistan. They bombed and occupied and died by the thousands and in the end they failed, even though they could move troops in and out at will and controlled plenty of airports and bases in or over the border with Afghanistan. You are proposing another Vietnam.
