Fred, I could not agree with you more. Shorting to turn a profit in these circumstances border on the heinous. I hope brokerage firms will limit this activity. Some firms will not allow shorting for the foreseeable future.

Perhaps boxing to protect a vulnerable long position would be sensible in lieu of outright selling.

Of course, no one can legislate greed. It can only be dealt with in the heart of each person. Sadly all of us are made poorer in the process.
