Certainly our actions should be continually examined and assessed (that would be true whether or not yesterday's events had happened). Buchannan's always been a bit of a flaming isolationist though. The fact is, there is only one superpower in the world, and we DO live under a Pax Americana. Therefore at times we'll have to take sides in disputes that p*ss someone off. I'd rather we do less of it, but it's hardly a black and white situation morally. It's like saying, "aw gee, this defense of liberty stuff is too danged hard...let's just forget the whole thing!" From Buchannan's perspective, ANY intervention is not worth the cost, 'cause someone might get PO'd at us. That's ridiculous (just ask Neville Chamberlain).

As far as "laying the blame at our own doorstep", that's a bit of moral relativism that doesn't pass the smell test. OK, our foreign policy is botched in someone's not-so-humble opinion? Deal with it in that arena, get yer diplomats to work. Don't fly jetliners into skyscrapers! No way does Bin Laden get a pass on this morally...he's responsible for his actions, and he must pay.

Finally, I agree, Osama's "warnings" vague and cryptic though they were should have been taken more seriously by the US intelligence community. Just another sign of how feeble the CIA and FBI became through 8 years of neglect by a hostile and negligent administration. That will change...and soon.
