I'm left thinking of the 1st "modern" war, which many say was the American Civil War. Marching battalions of troops up against a machine gun nest was not effective. This was repeated in WWI, briefly. The American Revolution was by some accounts the first guerrilla war.

Terrorism with suicidal "cells" doesn't fit any of our old models. The presumption in the past was that the opponent didn't want to die. Remember George C. Scott as Patton? That speech is not exactly true for the NEW modern war we saw a glimpse of yesterday, but involves the ratios of deaths and personal survival no longer matters. This new type of war (with dead opponents) requires a paradigm shift to go after the root causes. Happy people don't go to war and can't be convinced to off themselves.
