Most of these radical fundamentalists are operating using a "guidebook" written thousands of years ago which is completely inflexible and accommodating of change.

I completely disagree. On the contrary, the problem with this ugly form of "Islamic fundamentalism" is that they are not following the Koran at all. One example would be the oppression of women in the more extreme Islamic republics, which does not gibe with the teachings of Islam at all.
