Thomas the "Islamic fundamentalism" and the modern Islamic faith is an interpretation of a belief, similar in many ways like Christianity in the middle ages were people were burned at the stick for a variety of reason.

"Islamic fundamentalism" use the Koran to justify their action as are many other ME countries.
