Not so, for the most part. I've worked in these areas and know that the government leaders are generally quite conservative and tolerant. There are segments of these cultures which are extreme and which are highly influenced by mob action. The Cairo and Baghdad mobs are notorious, but though they are very vocal and active, they represent only a small part of the total population. Outright killing of U.S. civilians is as much detested in these countries as is the killing of Palestinian civilians by Israeli militants (who are also extremists). The leadership in these countries is not extreme, but is often driven to be more extreme than they would like by other events. The U.S. still has a lot of good will and is seen as a country you'd prefer to be friendly to, rather than opposed to.
