patron, what you say is excellent advise for an individual. Many will be doing this instinctively. The climate has changed. Pax Americana has been wounded, and we now have a climate worse than the good old cold war. During the cold war the balance of terror assured that use of nuclear weapons was extremely unlikely. After September 11, the use of weapons of mass destruction on American cities is a grim reality.

People will retrench and go back to saving at high single digits or more of their income very quickly. This will be disastrous for the macro economy, at least in the intermediate term.

After all the vengeance talk and the emotion dies down, our leaders hopefully will reflect on this new extremely unstable situation and act: no more "hands off" attitude on the Middle East. Plunge in with even more enthusiasm than Clinton, and engineer a mutually acceptable solution for the area, including generous American security and monetary incentives for all involved. Otherwise, the cost to America, which after Sept 11 is already enormous, will become mindboggling.
