It is the "rigid adherence" and the "prejudiced belief in the superiority of one's own" that causes the problems.

Rigid adherence is not a problem IMO unless the thing they are adhering to is itself bad, or if they force others to adhere to it. (Not just suggest or aruge or campaign but force). As for beliveing your ideas are more true or superior I have ideas that I think are better then some ideas that some other people have. Does that make me a chauvinist? If so then I submit it is not inherently a bad thing.

I'm not saying that the actions of many fundimentalists are not bad, I just think there is a big difference bettween the peaceful fundamentalists and the hateful killers who happen to also be fundamentalist.
