the easiest prey for con-men are decent people who are entirely honest

I have been very disturbed by such a problem. My 10-year old niece forwarded an e-mail which asked for help based on a sob story from parents whose kid 'apparently' had cancer. She forwarded it to all her friends as the e-mail requested. They also claimed that they had the support of AOL and another org.

So I sent an e-mail asking them for the person responsible at AOL who offered them the support. I got no e-mail returned. I suspect it is a con job. But I am finding it hard to explain to my niece that there are people like that out there and she will have to be careful. but i am afraid i will have ruined her innocence at this young age.
