The dimwit (Pahpadoupolos or whatever) stumbled into the truth with that assesment of the Afghans.

They are tough guerillas and have succesfully fought the Soviets and even more brutal civil conflicts for 20 years.

Hitting them with conventional weapons would be like sending them to bed without supper... Sending in ground troops would be very dicey.

A conventional nuclear strike on the other hand, though brutal, would drop the chances of any country providing support to these groups to virtually zero.

The Taliban may have realized that their only chance of averting something like this is to turn over Bin Laden... thus the house arrest (hope it's true).
