dhellman,

Re: <<The United States needs a superb covert operations capability -- of unquestioned skill and moral virtue -- to wage this war. Whether the United States has such a capability is what will have to be decided. But the other choices are between wild overcommitment and impotence." >>

Yes, I think that encapsulates well how difficult the tasks, and the risks and dilemmas which face us, are. At the risk of raising howls of protest from the Republicans among our community, I worry that President 'dim bulb' Bush doesn't have the wattage upstairs to appreciate and negotiate the sublteties and commplexities of the situation, at least from his pronouncements so far which simplistically define this conflict as between 'pure good' (us), and 'pure evil' (them). Since I deplore Clinton's moral fiber, I never thought I'd long for his intelligence in these matters. Let's hope that Bush will lean heavily on the advice of the 'adults' in his administration, such as Colin Powell. (Ok, I'm ready to be flamed ;-)
