In the midst of all the half informed speculation that is the best most of us can muster, your article from one who's often been there leaves me with a bigger chill than half of the bloodthirsty rants around here.

I think we've got to start at home - the threat of another quick or even more serious blow on our soil means it's time to round up the usual suspects (by careful profiling), ensure that nothing else is coming soon on our turf, and stop all new travel to the US by nationals from the suspect areas until we've got a grip again. How many more "cells" are lying about in the shadows around here, and how do we find them and deport them for good ?

A suspension of some of their usual freedom of movement may be necessary in the short term, to prevent another monstrosity from occuring while we're still reeling. Only then should we react overseas, when we're ready and know what needs to be done, and won't be distracted at home. Lobbing missles at the Afghani steppes will do us little good. Let's not leave ourselves vulnerable at home while we're in a blind rage trying to extract our vengence a world away.
