I heard on the radio last night the probable reason for the interest in Afghanistan. Apparently the next largest oil fields in the world are in and around the Caspian Sea, and the only route to get that oil out is through Afghanistan. Hence the CIA backing of Bin Laden and training of many militant factions to help him keep the Russians out. Apparently there are many over there that do not like Bin Laden because of his CIA ties. Unocal had contracted to build a pipeline through Afghanistan but backed out recently, he said. The interviewee also found it hard to believe that the US would go after Bin Laden for the above mentioned reasons.
