I don't know what provisions are made by the employers - the Borough of Manhattan, I guess - when firefighters and policemen are killed in the line of duty. Obviously, there's always the risk of death. I agree, their families must be helped. The pensions and insurance won't be adequate - but we also need to let them know how grateful we are - and to let all firefighters and emergency workers and police officers everywhere know how grateful we are.

In the days to come, we will learn about other families. Not everyone who died was covered by a pension plan or insurance, I am sure. I am sure that there were girls working in coffee shops as waitresses who were not married but had little children, and bicycle couriers and mailroom clerks who left a wife and kids, or an aged parent, or a helpless sibling. No doubt there were many, many in this situation.

We will have many who need our help.
