I think Afghanistan support has to also be viewed in the context of the invasion of Iran by Iraq, a Soviet client at that time, and the various Marxist rebel clients funded and trained by the Soviets and Cuba at that time. Some of these were faced off against other Marxist or government forces, supported by China. The U.S. assisted some of these and others in SE Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
