MAG: All Four Terror Teams Had Certified Pilots Wed Sep 12 2001 20:02:54 ET
New York - U.S. officials told TIME they have evidence that each of the four terrorist teams had a certified pilot with them, some of whom had flown for Saudi Airlines, according to a report now on TIME.com, the website of TIME magazine.
Tomorrow (Thursday) TIME will publish a memorial edition with the coverline, "September 11, 2001," about the terrorist attacks on Americans Tuesday. (TIME also will publish its regular weekly issue on Monday, September 17).
According to the report by TIME Congressional Correspondent Douglas Waller, which is on TIME.com and will appear in the magazine, TIME also has learned:
* Within the past few months, the FBI had placed two men associated with an Islamic Jihad terror group on a border watch list, but through a screw-up, the pair got into the U.S. The two men appear to have been on the American Airlines Flight 77, the plane that crashed into the Pentagon, TIME has learned.
* The blasts were so powerful, U.S. counter-terrorism officials have begun asking the airlines for fuel loads on the plane and aviation experts to calculate the explosive yield of each blast [EM]in kiloton terms. They are doing this to see if the planes amounted to weapons of mass destruction. The higher the yield, the more authority there is to declare war.
