David, Pakistan is going to be a real problem because of its ties to the Taliban and Bin-Laden. Money and arms have flowed through Pakistan to Afghanistan for decades and that's not going to stop on a dime. The mullahs and mosques that gave rise to the Taliban are in Pakistan. Yeah, Pakistan has been a US 'ally', but that's had more to do with hemming in the Russians during the cold war, offsetting the power of India and China, and maintaining the free flow of oil across the Indian ocean than with ideological agreement.

Pakistan has serious internal problems keeping order. Its government could fall during an extended US war against the Taliban. Its government could fall for a lot of other reasons. Then what? Fixing a mess like that would be just as difficult as the Israel Palestine issue.

The other weak government with large population is Egypt.

Some population numbers:
Afghanistan 25M
Egypt 68M
Iran 65M
Iraq 22M
Israel 5M
India 1.014B
Jordan 5M
Oman 2.5M
Pakistan is 141M
Qatar 0.6M
Saudi Arabia 5M
Syria 16M
Turkey 65M
United Arab Emirates 2M
Yemen 17M
