JB, I agree with you. Before this is all said and done, it will be a religious war. Not that I think the terrorist leaders are following their religions -- actually I think their leaders are taking David Koresh-like liberties. The terrorist leaders are using religion as a rallying cry against their opponents from whom they want to take power and wealth. Not very different from Protestant princes versus Catholic kings after Martin Luther. It really tweaks Bin-Laden that the US has an effectively permanent base in Saudi Arabia which helps shore up the Saudi government. What was he thinking? That he with his relatives would overthrow the Fahd family become its dictator?

The reason this will be a religious conflict is that one religion, or faction thereof, cannot accomodate others. There are aspects of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity which simply do not allow/respect people of differing beliefs. Fortunately in the cases of Judaism and Christianity, these beliefs have been subdued by the other secular considerations of the societies in which they exist. Not so for the poor of Islam. The poor aren't getting much that they value from their societies.
