Yes, I agree. I kind of marvel at the wisdom of our leaders at that period not to make the German people pay for their complicity, but to help give them a stake in building and maintaining a democracy by dealing them in economically. It certainly did pay off big-time, in retrospect. I don't know enough about the history of the period to know whether this was far-sighted wisdom on the part of the US leaders such as Marshall, or whether we were largely influenced by the fear of a crushed people turning to Communism. Probably some of both, I might guess.
