The point has been made that previous conflicts, such as WWII, were rather straightforward in the sense that the enemy had a country and all one needed to do was vanquish the country. This is different.

What did Japan want?

What did Germany want?

What do these people want?

When we know the answer to the last one, we'll know better what to do.

This is no time to rehash WWII, I know that, but there are even questions there about our own actions that might be bearing evil fruit in our world. Should we not be looking at the world we have helped create or should we just nuke the fuckers? You and I both know that that would only lead to unspeakable consequences down the road.

I tend to be philosophical and that's frustrating for most people. Fuck, I know that. We need to do something and I fully support that notion. But what really matters to me is not that we get even or that we eliminate a few terrorists, but that we take this opportunity to learn something that could really drive to the heart of the problem. Bin Laden is not the problem any more than the Columbian coca fields are the problem in the "drug war".
