Another factor is that, in past wars, the parties at war were more or less on equal terms and the threat to the remainder of the world was minimal. This is not the case now. The war can now be brought to your shores with relative ease, either by nation states with ICBM capability, or by lesser parties with suitcase nukes, biological weapons, well, you get the idea.

Our technological advances gives potential enemies, far and wide, an advantage that was simply not present in previous conflicts: cheap access to powerful capabilities that would boggle the minds of our grandfathers.
