the fct we were attacked in this EVIL way doesn't alter history and put a halo on our head. it does allow us to defend ourselves by attacking involved parties. innocent people s/b spared if at all possible - even if they hate us. otherwise, we BECOME them, whether we call ourselves "civilized" or not.

Agreed, Skeets. However, in the process of defending ourselves and attempting to deter the next attack we must turn to all those who have been playing both sides of the fence -- getting Western support while supporting anti-Western terrorism -- and ask, "Are you for us or against us?" Legitimate beefs are no excuse for this, and as I've said, I think at bottom, it's our existence and success that lies behind most of their greivances. We are not willing to undo those!

We must make the price of fighting by terrorist proxy too high to bear, just as Europe and American got together in the early 19th century got together and made the price of harboring pirates too high to bear. Remember why the Marines sing about "the shores of Tripoli"?
