REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Sept 13 (Reuters) - Software giant
Oracle Corp. (ORCL.O) on Thursday posted fiscal first-quarter
earnings that topped previous estimates.
Oracle's release of its fiscal first-quarter results was
the first major bit of corporate news following Tuesday's air
attacks on New York City's World Trade Center and the Pentagon
in Northern Virginia.
The Redwood Shores, California-based company said it earned
$510.65 million, or 9 cents per share, versus $500.68 million,
or 8 cents, in the year-ago period. Oracle had forecast that
per-share earnings would be flat year-over-year.
Total revenue fell to $2.24 billion from $2.26 billion a
year ago. Software license revenues fell to $731.43 million
from $807.24 million, a bit better than the company's August
warning that those sales could be up to 10 percent lower than a
year ago.
Oracle canceled its conference call with analysts slated
for Thursday afternoon and said rescheduled the call for after
Monday's close -- when stock trading is slated to resume. Chief
executive Larry Ellison has also canceled his Thursday
television appearances.
Oracle on Thursday confirmed that one of its regional sales
managers was killed on a plane that was hijacked in Tuesday's
attacks. Six consultants, who were scheduled to be working in
the since-destroyed World Trade Center, remain missing.
