Paterno to appear on HBO tonight

By: Sports Information
Date: September 13, 2001

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno will be featured tonight on HBO's "Real Sports With
Bryant Gumbel." The program will air at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The program is scheduled to air again on the following dates
(all times ET/PT):
Sept. 14, 6:00 p.m.;

Sept. 16, 11:00 a.m.;

Sept. 18, 8:30 a.m.;

Sept. 20, 5:00 p.m.;

Sept. 22, 10:00 a.m.;

Sept. 25, 1:30 and 8:00 p.m.

In his 36th season as head coach of the Nittany Lions, Paterno is second in all-time victories with a 322-91-3 record, a winning percentage of 77.6. With the Nittany Lions' second victory during the 2001 campaign, Paterno will pass Paul "Bear" Bryant for most career wins by a Division I-A coach. Only Eddie Robinson (408), John Gagliardi (377-active) and Bryant (323) have more career victories than Paterno across all NCAA divisions.

Paterno's winning percentage is fourth-best among active coaches. He's won two national championships (1982 and '86), compiled five undefeated seasons (1968, '69, '73, '86 and '94) and is the all-time bowl victories and appearances leader with a 20-9-1 mark. Only two of his 35 teams have had a record below .500.

Penn State is 0-1 after losing to No. 1 Miami on Sept. 1. The Nittany Lions were scheduled to play at Virginia tonight, but the game has been moved to December 1 in the wake of Tuesday's tragic events in the nation.

Penn State will return to action September 22, hosting Wisconsin at 12:10 p.m. ESPN will televise the game.
