<<We have the best and we have to protect it at any cost.>>
Then fight you should.

I also like the United States. I was born here and I still live here. Would I fight for it? No.

Joh 18:36* Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

or

Mt 26:52* Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

If you have faith in eternal life, a just God who will judge righteously, then it is, I believe, easier to cope and understand why these things happen. If not(no faith), then I think it is safe to say that every man will do what he or she believes is best. That may be to nuke Iraq or drive an airplane into the WTC. If there is no God, it all becomes relative to one's perspective. I don't hold the view that there is not a just and righteous God who will one day hold each and every one of us accountable for our individual actions.
