Why? I would conjecture if Patton was alive today he may well have a number of politically incorrect views, but that would damn sure not affect his credibility while discussing areas of his expertise. I, too, would argue this particular statement to be needlessly inflammatory, however- we were not attacked for this reason. We were attacked because we are hated; we were probed and found to be totally vulnerable. We have been a self-absorbed, soft, weak-willed people( in the aggragate) self-deluded to the dangers of the world because, well, it INCONVENIENCED us to be otherwise. We have enjoyed the legacy of peace and prosperity bequeathed to us by the blood of generations past, and have squandered it away like neer-do-well heirs. Do not get me wrong, I love America and still believe we are a great people. It is only in the area of paying attention to national matters I see this deterioration- most Americans are very productive in their personal lives, are generous, solid people. But I daresay hiring a secretary gets more rigorous scrutiny than how we choose our elected officials; Seinfeld re-runs are paid far more attention than world news; the average Joe is about 100 angstroms deep in history, how government works, etc. I hope the events of this week can be a catalyst for positive change in these areas. |
