I happened to be chatting with one of the country's top Iraq experts today (so I could steal his ideas), and I put to him the question of Iraqi involvement in the attack. His answer was that he'd be extremely surpised to learn they were involved, because the Iraqi idea of a subtle attack on the WTC would be to drive a truck up to the door, stick a machine gun out the window, and start shooting. He said a more plausible connection would be financial, i.e. Saddam giving several million bucks to Bin Laden to help finance the thing. But when I questioned whether that would be necessary, given how little such things cost and how much Bin Laden himself has, he agreed. His estimate for how much the whole operation required: a few hundred thousand dollars.
