and Gore Vidal who most certainly won't be heard by the bulk of Americans as "we" decide what we are going to do as a nation to put our youth in harm's way half way around the world.

Some on the thread with a more scholarly bent may be inclined toward a history of machinations by imperial powers in the Central Asia theatre, the recent book by Karl Meyer, "Tournament of Shadows: The Great Game and the Race for Empire in Central Asia":

will prove to be good for setting the stage on what is coming next. Will we repeat the folly of the Soviets in invading Afghanistan? Heaven help us if we do. The place is a quagmire. But, on the other hand, this book review quote is intriguing:

Shucks, maybe we could shoot for a twofer. Ousting Osama and Extracting Oil..... (somehow, I have my doubts about both propositions... )
