Win Re...Harry, where do you think the US is going to find 10 more ANWRs? <<<<<<<<

I am willing to bet that there are at least 10 ANWRs and several Saudi Arabia's under the ocean. We just have to find them, and get rid of the NIMBY complex.

There used to be big pilot programs for this stuff, it was all shut down in the '80s.<<<<<<<<<

True, but they weren't economical then. Also I hear the Tar sands produce dirty oil, plus it makes and ecological mess. Same with the shale projects. There is easily enough uranium in the oceans and coal to supply this country for hundreds of yrs.; not to mention tritium, plus the ability of breeder reactors to make more.

Nuclear's problems have a lot more to do with incompetent utility management and regulatory problems than with environmentalists. <<<<<<

Yeah right, and Bill wasn't a crook or liar. The early nuclear plants were quite safe and cheap. The later plants, burdened by regulations imposed by regulators trying to appease environmentalists, became overly complex and expensive. No one has died in this country after 40 yrs of nuclear power. It is reputed that 15000 people die each yr from pollution put out by coal, oil and gas plants. You do the math and tell me if the environmentalists were scaring the right people.

It would be a huge gamble for private industry to put up the money for plants that might or might not be ready 7 or 10 years down the road. <<

Not any more. There already are nuclear plants out there, pebble bed reactors is just one style, which cannot overheat and melt the core; and thus do not need redundant shutdown systems.. It is small, and can be built in two yrs. and promises to run as cheap as oil and far cleaner than coal, and if we quit building gas turbine plants, natural gas might again be inexpensive enough for the common homeowner. Not only is nuclear cheaper than natural gas, but it also will save the natural gas we have for more efficient purposes. Home furnaces are 90% efficient and clean. Natural gas turbines are 35% efficient. One forty acre plant is equivalent to 200,000 acres of windmills.
