// The Russians found out that Afghanistan is a tough place to go to war. //

But wasn't the Russian war one of conquest and occupation, analogous to the Vietnamese War?

A U.S. operation in Afghanistan ought to be one of strike, kidnap (perhaps), and get out.

We ought to be studying Israeli operations models - the freeing of hostages in Entebbe, Uganda and the kidnapping of Adolph Eichman in Argentina. No one ever 'invaded' Argentina.
