I do know that our enemy does not look at life as we do, so the rules we play by end up biting us.

It is true that our rules end up biting us. That is always the burden of somebody with principle fighting someone who doesn't. A bank robber won't think twice about using a hostage as a human shield or killing innocent people to escape justice. A cop would never think of using a civilian as a human shield to catch that bank robber, eh would never think of sacrificing innocent civilians just so he can bring the crook to justice. That is what makes him the good guy and the crook a bad guy.
