You can criticize American foreign policy any old time - ever read "The Ugly American"? - written I think in the late 50's/early 60's - a very illuminating view of American foreign policy attitudes and action in Southeast Asia at that time and illustrates our total lack of understanding of their culture and history and how caused us so many problems, leading of course to Vietnam. In some respects not much has changed - Southeast Asians are "not like us" and neither are Arabs/Muslims so we blunder along. Whatever we could have/should have done, however, America is, as Frank just said, at war. We were attacked, what do we do now? I agree there is no quick and dirty answer a la bombing Libya. I believe the approach, strategy and tactics we use to combat terrorism will be to be very different from those used in any previous war, and it will be a long-drawn out process over time, as this is a battle between belief systems. It is just as important for us to show that we are willing to fight for what we believe in too.
