As to the targeting of Arab Americans, mosques and the like, that need to be addressed swiftly and decisively.

Back from the dentist, two temporary crowns in place. Somewhat strange morning. Closed streets. Traffic jams. Checkpoints. My dentist is in the USA Today building in Rosslyn, just north of the Pentagon. It's a tall building right on the Potomac. There was quite a bit of controversy when it was first built. People in the offices were getting to see the faces of people in planes landing at National. A bit disconcerting to be sure. Seemed strange there today with no planes in the sky. They're saying that National may be closed for weeks.

I was in the chair for more than two hours. A local radio station was playing. At noon it was silent and then they played taps. As that was going on, a dentist who assists my dentist was holding a tray full of purple goo in my mouth making an impression for the crowns. I felt myself starting to tear up and then his hand started to shake a bit. I don't know what he was thinking. He's Arab. I don't know if there's a hyphen American after that or not. I just met him a couple of weeks ago when I started going to that dentist. He introduced himself as a "foreign dentist." I took that to mean what is quite common around here--people who were professionals in their own country but are not licensed here so they work as assistants. He took the impressions and made the temporary crowns.

I had a total of four encounters with Arabs today. Having the fingers of one in my mouth as they played taps on the radio made me aware of it. There were the guys in the garage where I parked. One who trotted across a busy street against the light right in front of me and waved thanks to everyone for stopping. And the deli where I stopped for carry out. I saw no indication of any particular stress in anyone. Everything seemed normal. That guy wouldn't have crossed the street that way if he felt at all threatened. Hopefully the problems are sporadic. And temporary.

P.S. There was a traffic jam in front of the Salvation Army. Bunches of caterers' trucks dropping food off. Lots of cancelled parties so the good folks doing search and recovery at the Pentagon site should be eating well.
