JJ, the implied hypothesis is: direct military retaliation for terrorist acts as a sole means for eradicating fundamentalist-based terrorism is ineffective over the long-term. The evidence to date seems to support this.

It's like the Sorcerer's apprentice hacking at the broom, only to be dismayed at two more rising in its place.

One foreign attack on American soil is anecdotal. However, one could conceivably make the case that it was a direct response to our attempt to hit Bin Laden a couple of years ago (assuming he is in fact the mastermind here).

I would be ecstatic if proved wrong here.
