Jamok: But I find your post so astounding in its assumptions

Indeed! Carls post was really astounding!

in their case, a world under Islamic culture and laws

Common misunterstandig. I can't remember of a single Islamic leader (not even radical-fundamentalist) who ever made propaganda for this. Even ultra-fundamentalist terrorist Bin Ladin talks only about the Israel/Palestina problem and the problem of the US having a military base in the country of Mekka and Medina. (Mind you: there are three "holy" places for the Islamic religion: Mekka, Medina, Jerusalem)

They never ever wanted to turn America or any other western state into an Islamic culture. Quite contrary to Christian religion, Islam is not missionary. However, Islam is very aggressive in defending their religious territory (Palestina, Afghanistan, ...)

Increased imported western "social engineering" can be very destabilizing for the western oriented, Islamic countries (Turkey, Egypt, ...). The governments are very worried about the development of these days, I think. There are a lot of fundamentalist leaders, only waiting to exploit the propagandistic possibilities of a western intervention. I bet this is the calculus of Bin Ladins (or who ever) terrorist act as they count on a heavy retiliation act, of course. Their target is (I assume) to get ultimately the whole islamic region converted to Islamic fundamentalism. This is not expansive. It's a reconquery (for them). This is what the Prophet did. This is a circumstance (regain "stolen" territory) you're allowed to apply violence. And if you die in such a fight, your sins are forgiven. Do you see the symbols and the logic? (Please, don't get me wrong: those guys are criminals. Nothing else. But they are not stupid.)

Cleaning up Afghanistan is no problem, of course. It IS not the problem, in fact.
What are you going to clean up there, BTW? I believe you're not going to find many enemies there. In the beginning. Afterwards ....

Wrt. to the situation in Iraq, Carl writes: If we had taken out Saddam a decade ago, none of this would have happened. But why the hell Saddam wasn't taken out by Powell, Cheyney and Dad? To give Saddam a chance to regret his sins and try a better life? The continued boycott and bombing as a consequence has been and is detrimental for the whole region.
If those guys have been unable to do the right thing then, did they learn meantime? And what?

And what we got in return was an expression of their crazy rage in the form of Hitler.
Absolutely. The humiliation of Germany after WWI was a very successful point in Hitlers propaganda.

Kind of Kobiashi Maru Test for the western civilisation?

Best, Boris
