Possibly so... and that would be a shame, as well as a victory for the Taleban.
We're likely to see the entire middle east torn up in a civil war between secularists(moderates) and the islamic fundamentalists.
Few goverments, including the Pakistanis, really "love" these radicals, because of the intimidation they display against local populations. For instance, as a Pakistani friend of mine explained to me, in Peshawar, if you're a Pakistani who can't show that you actually know someone in the area, they'll shoot you on the spot. These local "war lords" and radical clerics, feel no loyalty to any government but their own (and Allah's).
This is a similar situation in many other parts of the Mid-East, where secular governments constantly must confront their religious extremist elements.
