this country NEVER developed a technology to eliminate the need for oil. In fact, look at the mileage your car or SUV gets now versus what your car got for mileage 30 years ago. No improvement

Eliminating the need for oil will solve lots of very serious environmental problems as well. For some reason, the world has not wanted to take these issues seriously (especially the USA) but they are inevitable in the years and decades to come. I think President Bush realizes that supporting big oil companies like he has in the past is not the right policy. I bet he already does and we will see him increase support for the development of the alternative fuels.

Maybe the war on terrorism and war against environmental pollution can be won at the same time. Hoping for the best.

btw--I am not saying that getting rid of the need for oil is to punish the middle east; it just does too much damage to the environment.
