My case for Western respect and friendship for the Mid East, no matter how insincere, is to try to steer future generations away from the Bin Laden hatred. To make them at least tolerate us.


We can and must do all we can to be friends and allies with the masses in the Middle East; I was just pointing out that the terrorist cell fanatics are largely immune to reasonable persuasion. And damn hard to infiltrate as the experts have noted. We will most likely catch them through communications intercepts, swift action and some luck.

As for what is expected, believe me that someone somewhere on a government payroll has thought through and role-played just about every scenario physically possible concerning terrorism. But there is only so much you can do. For example, the airspace over the Mall in Washington is restricted and the White House has its own anti-aircraft systems - so it didn't get hit.

But the Pentagon sits under the flight path for two airports. You can't shut down the airspace or blow up any jet that happens to stray off course.

I agree we had become much too complacent about hijackings. Coming back to the US from overseas more and more often, I noticed how soft our airports and airplanes were compared to the average European airport. Now we have to get used to a new regimen.
