<Would you go up to a rape victim the day after she was brutally raped and say "well, you know, we should understand that your rapist had viable root causes behind his rape of you, that he was beaten as a child, and I want you to consider this even as you are crying out for him to be punished"? >

This is a discussion and debate thread. I'm not over at the survivors memorial espousing any such question. If you are personally grieving then, I would offer you my sincere condolences and ask that you stop entering into political discussions about macroeconomics, geopolitics and foreign policy because, I certainly don't think I would be objective in that moment of grief. In fact, I know I wouldn't.

So, getting back to your example, if you are seriously her for discussion, you don't want the police to go off half cocked and shoot up the part of town where the rape occurred, now would you? Get the rapist, by all means. But let's not take out the Mayor's Office in the town where it happened, unless, of course, the Mayor was directly involved and ALL the occupants of the City Hall were participants or egged the rapist on.

<If you would, you are far more insensitive than I give you credit for.>
This could be interpreted as a "when did you stop beating your wife?" statement. Jeez, Chris, just how much insensitivity do you give me credit for?

I expect that the U.S is unfortunately going to have more of this and not less. We need to think past the next ten minutes SOME of the time and lay out a national strategy. Historically, the best foreign policy has not been done in haste. The LESS the government says about what they are going to do at this point, the better, IMO.
