Bob, my only brokerage account is my Keogh account. It doesn't matter what I do with the money that's in that account, I can't touch it for a long time. So your suggestion that selling stock will free up money to help people doesn't apply to me.
I already gave to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. I expect to give more. The Salvation Army is my favorite charity. The reason is a funny story an old guy I used to work with told me.
He was an enlisted man in WWII, stationed in England. The Red Cross and the Salvation Army both would have food and drinks for all the military men and women, but the Red Cross had better food and drinks for the officers than they had for the enlisted men, while the Salvation Army treated them both the same. He swore he'd never give a penny to the Red Cross.
Well, I know the Red Cross does good work, but so does the Salvation Army. So I give to the Salvation Army. I also give to the Red Cross, but not regularly.
You give to whomever you want, how much you want, and how often you want, and God bless you. But you shouldn't use charity as a talking point in an argument, IMO.
Donate to the Red Cross through Costco. Our office took up a collection because someone had a list of what the people working at the Pentagon need. The list included men's underwear, men's socks, granola bars, shaving cream, razors . . . the train that went to New York today had stuff like contact lens solution, eye wash . . . you just never know what they need until they ask for it.
