You might well have a frozen shoulder by now. That's caused by adhesions in the various tissues of the shoulder joint. Certain stretching exercises and massage can fix that without surgery.

Last year, I damaged my right shoulder last year while running a drill press all day for 2 or 3 days each week. My shoulder lost almost all movement (frozen should) so that I couldn't raise my arm out to the side or up at all. I actually fixed the problem myself by putting my hand against a door frame, as high as I could stand to raise my arm, and then putting just a little of my weight against the arm to stretch the muscles. It took dozens of short sessions like that over a few weeks, but eventually I regained full use of the shoulder. Unfortunately, I had a bad fall onto ice on my left shoulder in February. I've been using the same stretching exercise and now I'm just back to about 2/3 of my normal movement -- much better than a couple of months ago when I barely had any mobility. At the beginning of summer, I couldn't go canoeing at all, but I've been out a lot over the past 6 weeks and that's also helping to get the shoulder working again. And yes, there is a lot of pain associated with this kind of injury.
