To those who dismiss criticism of an indiscriminate approach to striking back as 'softheaded liberalism' (hmly, for one), Col. David Hackworth was making some very interesting comments on exactly those dangers on CNBC - advocating a very selective strike-back, lest we get engaged in what he called 'another Vietnam'. The gist of his argument was that by using a scalpel, rather than the gut-urge to carpet-bomb, we'll be saving ourselves a lot of unnecessary grief.

Some potentially good news: The people that the FBI detained at La Guardia under suspicion that they were posing as pilots, etc. and were suspected of attempting another atrocity were released and proclaimed innocent by authorities. I hope this bodes that there are no other unseen 'bombs' in the immediate works as feared. I think the destablizing effects of another tragedy so close to what just occurred would be just unbearable.
