Captain Jack - very good post.

Actually, I agree with (to 95%, at least). I just
thought that Afghan letter would provide some useful
counterpoint for discussion.

Here is the core problem: our enemy is very smart.
And - despite what Bush said - they are not cowards.
Fanatics, maybe. Crazy, maybe. But also very intelligent
and quite willing to die for their beliefs. The scope
and success of the attacks prove their competency here.

"There's nothing worse than a brave and competent evil person" - FDR.

So I fear we might not be giving these folks credit.
Dangerous to underestimate your enemy, don't you think?

Don't get me wrong. Obviously, the Taliban and Osama
have got to go down. I just hope we do it smartly
(leveraging our special forces and the Northern Alliance),
rather than just blasting a lot of mud huts from air
and thinking we've won. We may get a very nasty surprise
in return, if we do that and think it's over.
